After being taken over by Juno, accessing the free ISP brings up a "Download Juno" page no matter what site you visit. The blockage works by the ISP's DNS servers pointing every domain name (e.g. www.blahblah.com) to their "Download Juno or DIE!!" page instead of the server it really belongs to. In some cases (e.g. Freewwweb) you can change your DNS server so that you can access sites normally, without the Juno page. RoadFury shares the following instructions:
For Win 95/98:
1. Double-click on My Computer
2. Double-click on Dial-Up Networking
3. Look in the folder for your dial-up connection
4. Right-click on the icon and left-click on Properties
5. Click on the Server Types tab
6. Click on the TCP/IP Settings button
7. Click the circle next to Specify name server addresses
8. Press the TAB key on your keyboard
9. Type 207.217.126.81 and press the TAB key again
10. Type 207.217.120.83 and click OK
11. Click OK again and close out of any windows

(Deprecated) The info below was originally written to bypass Worldspy's "Download Juno" page, but may be applicable to other free ISPs that have merged with Juno, where the DNS can't be changed for some reason.
In typical "drug dealer ware" fashion, Worldspy has bait-and-switched to a banner-spam infested service by blocking out access to all non-Worldspy pages and demanding that the user set up a (banner-spam) Juno account to continue receiving internet access (we all knew this would happen sooner or later, right?). As I'm sure you all know how I feel about drug dealers, here is a way to temporarily bypass this blockade and access other webpages.
1) DNS Power!
The blockage works by Worldspy
forcing the use of its (buggered) DNS nameservers, which redirect any
domain name (e.g. www.blahblah.com) to their "Download Juno or DIE!!" page
instead of the server it really belongs to. The obvious way around this
is to access the servers directly by their IP address, which bypasses the
bogofied Worldspy DNS servers. Problem is, nobody in his/her right mind
knows the IP address of his/her favourite sites! Fortunately, there is
a way to find it--by using a tool called NSLOOKUP.
199.182.120.1 |
If you have an NSLOOKUP client, type the site's name (blahblah.com) into it. It will return the server's IP address. If you need it, use the DNS lookup server provided above.
If you DON'T have an NSLOOKUP
client, or don't know what one is (this means just about everbody :) press
here to use an online version of it. Type the server's name (blahblah.com)
into the first blank, and the DNS server above into the second. It will
return the server's IP address. (Use querytype=A
and List: HOST if these options are not selected
already.)
2) Connect
Enter the IP address (###.###.###.###) the lookup gives you in place of the server name. Ex: If you wanted http://www.northernlight.com/ , type http://216.34.102.230/ into your browser. If it works, congratulations! Happy surfing. If you get the "Download Juno" page again, this means the server redirected you to another blahblah.com name (or perhaps its own). Make sure you included the ending "/" on the address--if that doesn't work, try typing index.htm or index.html after the /, e.g. http://216.../index.html. If you still can't get thru, skip down to "Advanced" below.
Even if you can access your favourite sites, this is all still a big pain in the ass, so I'd recommend finding new service ASAP :)
3) Caveats (bad stuff)
This trick will work for many websites. However, you will be unable to access the site you want if:
If you've tried and tried to get into a site, and keep getting the Juno stuff, the site is redirecting you to another name (blahblah.com) or page (/blah.html). To find out what it is, use Telnet to see where it's redirecting you:
