THE RAG - History
THE RAG is an underground student newsletter that was published by a group of anonymous authors through (approximately) the 2001-2002 school years at Tri-State University. Its primary purpose was to serve as competition, or rather, a diametric opposite to, the heavily-edited 'official' student newspaper. Questions about the makeup and respective affiliations of the official newspaper's staff, as well as a widely-perceived inability to express the full range of opinions, suggested the need for an alternative forum. The contents were often raw, usually offensive (to at least someone), but seldom as dull as the alternative.

During some of THE RAG's final months, the official student newspaper began to get racy. Possibly fearing lost readership, it added a full opinion page and even began running editorials that dealt with (gasp!) controversial contemporary issues, such as the priest molestations that were a hot issue at the time. It is unknown to us whether the official paper's "harder edge" has persisted now that THE RAG has ceased publication.

THE RAG is no longer published (to our knowledge), as the authors have all graduated. This Web archive will remain as a tribute to the underground newsletter we knew and loved.

Underground Publications at Tri-State University
THE RAG is the only underground publication we know of in recent history, and certainly the only one we have copies of. Reportedly, however, TSU was also home to a student publication in the '70s or so (?) known as The Sewer Pipe. If anyone has further information about this or other TSU student publications, or better yet, copies of them, we would be glad to archive it here for the benefit of future generations. For contact information, see below.
